The Bishop's Men Lead the Way
The Knights of the Southern Cross WA, established here in Perth in 1922, is a wonderful organisation of Catholic laymen, which work to promote the advancement of Australia; foster a Christian way of life; promote the welfare of its members; encourage social and intellectual activity; and conduct and support various educational, charitable, religious and social welfare work.
His Grace invited key representatives from the Order of The Knights of the Southern Cross (WA) to join him for a special presentation of the St Mary's Cathedral Conservation & Completion Project and the Cathedral Appeal.
On 6 December 2006, the Most Rev Donald Sproxton, Auxiliary Bishop of Perth and Rev Monsignor Michael Keating, Appeal Chairman, joined His Grace in the Cathedral Presbytery Dining Room to welcome guests from the KSC to morning tea.
The response received from the leadership of the KSC was thankfully very positive. His Grace asked "The Bishop's Men" (as they are commonly known) to generously support this historic appeal for St Mary's Cathedral.
We are delighted to report in letter dated 20 December 2006, the KSC Chairman wrote on behalf of The Order of the Southern Cross WA to Archbishop Hickey, confirming a pledge of $1,000,000 from The Bishops Men specifically to fund the restoration of the beautiful organ for St Mary's Cathedral.
This outstanding gift was to be provided over a five years commencing 2007.
Representatives from the Knights joined His Grace and Monsignor Keating onsite at St Mary's Cathedral to present a cheque for $100,000, the first installment of the $1,000,000 pledge.
We cannot express how grateful we are to every member of the Knights of the Southern Cross WA for this outstanding demonstration of support for St Mary's Cathedral and the Archdiocese.
Once again, The Bishops Men have led by generous example...
... may it be one others will follow in the months ahead.
